Donald Frick jumped at the chance to get out of Cleveland and work in the west during the summer of 1953 when he was 18. A truck took him and a crew of about 32 young men from Priest River to Hughes Meadow. From there, they hike over the ridge and down into the Upper Priest River basin at Rock Creek. For three month, Don followed his "lane" marked with string up the mountain side removing Gooseberry Ribes. He recalled, "It was one of the best decisions I made." During his honeymoon in 1959, he and wife Georgia drove up to Hughes Meadow and found same packer still working in the area. In 1980, Don bought a cabin in Kalispell Bay with two other couples. Tom Weitz interviewed Don. |
